Oman Is About to Implement New RoHS Requirements

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman is going to implement new Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) requirements. The implementation of the new rules is planned for the end of June, 2020.

Thus, new radio and telecommunications terminal equipment that is subject to the type approval procedure will also have to show its compliance with RoHS requirements. The RoHS requirements are based on the EU Directive 2017/2102 that amends Directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

RoHS restricted substances and their maximum concentration values tolerated by weight in homogeneous materials include:

  • cadmium (0.01%);
  • lead (0.1%);
  • mercury (0.1%);
  • hexavalent chromium (0.1%);
  • polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) (0.1%);
  • polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) (0.1%);
  • bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) (0.1%);
  • butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) (0.1%);
  • dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (0.1%); and
  • diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (0.1%).

The application of the RoHS requirements is aimed to reduce hazardous materials in electronics and help partially resolve the global issue of consumer electronics waste. So it is very important to follow the RoHS requirements.
