The GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) has announced the enforcement of updated standards for socket-outlets across GCC Countries. These national standards are based on the relevant international standards.
On February 21, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) released new version of the following standards:
IEC 60884-2-2:2025 “Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes - Part 2-2: Particular requirements for socket-outlets for appliances” This is the third edition of the standard that applies to socket-outlets. They can be fitted with earthing contact, rated voltage should not exceed 250 V, and rated current should not exceed 16 A
IEC 60884-2-3:2025”Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes - Part 2-3: Particular requirements for switched socket-outlets without interlock for fixed installations” This is the third edition of the standard that applies to switched socket-outlets without interlock, for fixed AC installations. Rated voltage should not exceed 440 V and rated current should not exceed 32 A. The standard covers only socket-outlets intended for household and similar purposes, controlled by a manually operated mechanical switch
IEC 60884-2-6:2025“Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes - Part 2-6: Particular requirements for switched socket-outlets with interlock for fixed electrical installations” This is the second edition of the standard that applies to switched socket-outlets with interlock for AC-only fixed electrical installations. The standard covers socket-outlets intended for household and similar purposes that operate in a rated range between 50 V and 440 V and rated current not exceeding 32 A.
All of these new editions are aligned with the fourth edition of IEC 60884‑1.
Current valid standards in GCC countries:
GSO IEC 60884-2-2:2009 (IEC 60884-2-2:2006)
GSO IEC 60884-2-3:2009 (IEC 60884-2-3:2006)
GSO IEC 60884-2-6:2007 (IEC 60884-2-6:1997)
However, GSO gives manufacturers and importers a two-year transition period to implement the new version of standards. After this period:
All Gulf Type Examination certificates issued for socket-outlets have to contain new versions of the standards
All previously issued certificates where the above-mentioned standards are indicated must be updated to include the last version of the standards
