Colombia Allocates New Frequency Band

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies and the National Spectrum Agency of Colombia issued Resolution 737 that modifies Resolution 105 of 2020 and updates the National Frequency Allocation Table. The Resolution 737 permits the use of Wi-Fi 6E within the operating frequency band 5925 - 7125 MHz for Wireless Access Systems (WAS) applications.

Thus, the following changes were made on November 18, 2022 by this Resolution:

  • Article 1, table 1.2 was supplemented with:
  • Article 2. Section 3.8 of Annex 1 of Resolution 105 of 2020 was added with 3.8.3:

    “3.8 WIRELESS ACCESS SYSTEMS (WAS)
    (…)
3.8.3 SPECIFIC OPERATION CONDITIONS IN THE 5925 – 7125 MHZ BAND.

The ERIP maximum should not exceed 30 dBm for access devices and 24 dBm for client devices. Furthermore, the spectral density of ERIP should not to exceed 5 dBm for access devices and -1 dBm for client devices, in any 1 MHz band.

The spectral density of ERIP should be attenuated 20 dB at a distance of 1 MHz from the end of the channel, 28 dB at a distance of one channel of separation from the center of the channel and 40 dB at a distance of 1.5 channels of separation from the center of the channel.

Emissions outside the band 5925 – 7125 MHz must be limited to a spectral density of EIRP maximum - 27 dBm/MHz.

Only the use of indoors devices is allowed. The use of devices located on oil rigs, cars, trains, boats, and aircraft is not allowed except for aircraft flying above 10,000 feet. The operation of equipment intended to control or communicate with unmanned aerial vehicles is not allowed.

Access devices must be powered directly from the commercial electrical power network, the use of batteries is not allowed, and their structure must not support outdoor use. Devices must only work with an antenna integrated into their structure.
  • Article 3. The National Spectrum Agency will publish on its website the National Table of Frequency Band Allocation with its modifications and updates so that it can be freely consulted by interested parties.
  • Article 4. This resolution is effective from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.

All this measures are taken to facilitate the access to Wi-Fi technology for end users in those places where there is no coverage of mobile service networks (IMT), as an alternative to obtain high-quality internet services.
